Scott Saffold

Scott Saffold is a board-certified otolaryngologist, founder, and medical director of Chesapeake Bay ENT, a well-established ear, nose, and throat practice in Southeastern Virginia. Since 2001, he has led the growth of the Belle Haven-based clinic from a single-site facility in a medically underserved rural area into a respected multi-location organization. The practice is recognized for delivering evidence-based, technologically advanced care with compassion and respect. In May 2026, he will mark 25 years of medical practice in the state of Virginia.

His leadership is built on a foundation of patient-centered care and staff development. Dr Scott Saffold has cultivated a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging innovation and data-driven decision-making. Through his guidance, team members at all levels—from front desk staff to advanced practice providers—have grown professionally and contributed to the practice’s success.

Saffold chose to develop smaller, community-based locations instead of a large, centralized facility, tailoring each site to the unique needs of the neighborhoods it serves. This approach has strengthened partnerships with referring physicians and created a more personal and accessible experience for patients.

Dr Saffold is committed to providing care to all patients, regardless of their insurance status. His systems prioritize people and long-term outcomes over short-term efficiency, reflecting his commitment to equitable and compassionate healthcare. He aims to be remembered as a leader who empowered others and always put patient care first.

Recognized as a pioneer in the use of advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, he established rigorous training and supervision standards that expanded access while maintaining consistent quality and safety. He also led efforts to incorporate AI-assisted documentation, in-office CT scanning, and in-office laryngeal biopsies, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient convenience.

Dr Scott Saffold serves on the board of a regional hospital system and has contributed to partnerships that expand healthcare access in rural Virginia. Local media often interview him about sinonasal disease and balloon sinus dilation. His academic work includes publications on selective neck dissection, dermal allografts in reconstructive surgery, and tumor immunology.

Since 2014, he has been the Medical Director of the Virginia Sinus Center in Virginia Beach. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology and a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Scott earned a degree in Cell Biology from UC Berkeley in 1990. He graduated at the top of his class from Meharry Medical College, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His postgraduate training included a General Surgery Internship at the University of New York at Buffalo, a research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and an otolaryngology residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. His training covered specialties including otology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic surgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, and head and neck radiology. He selected general otolaryngology to provide comprehensive care to his community.

Dr Saffold sponsors a scholarship at Meharry Medical College, supporting underrepresented students, and holds an MBA from Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business in Norfolk, Virginia.

His academic achievements include awards in anatomy, pathology, hematology, and internal medicine, as well as membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Outside of medicine, Scott Saffold is a devoted father of two, a youth football coach, and an endurance athlete who has completed multiple marathons and triathlons, including two half-Ironman competitions. He also enjoys reading in his free time.
